Effects

  • Reduction of thyroid hormones (T3 & T4): Blocks thyroid peroxidase-mediated synthesis of T3 and T4, progressively lowering circulating thyroid hormone levels and restoring euthyroid (normal) thyroid status [2].
  • Relief of hyperthyroid symptoms: As hormone levels normalise, symptoms such as rapid heart rate, excessive sweating, nervousness, heat intolerance, and tremor are progressively alleviated [4].
  • Pre-surgical / pre-radioiodine thyroid control: Used to render a hyperthyroid patient euthyroid before thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine treatment, reducing surgical and anaesthetic risk [6].
  • Possible immunomodulation in Graves' disease: Some evidence suggests a secondary immunomodulatory effect reducing thyroid-stimulating antibodies, though it is unclear if this is direct or secondary to lower thyroid hormone levels [5].
