What it is
Drostanolone propionate (brand name Masteron) is an injectable anabolic–androgenic steroid (AAS) derived from dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It was once used medically to treat breast cancer in women but is no longer marketed for that purpose, and is now used non-medically for physique and performance enhancement.[1][2]
How it works
Drostanolone propionate is a prodrug that, once injected, is cleaved to active drostanolone, which acts as an agonist of the androgen receptor and triggers genetic changes that increase protein synthesis (anabolism) and decrease amino-acid breakdown (catabolism).[2] Because it is a DHT derivative, it is not a substrate for the aromatase enzyme, so it cannot convert to estrogen — explaining its lack of estrogenic bloat and its mild anti-estrogenic ("hardening") reputation.[2][3] It is a poor substrate for the 3α-HSD enzyme found in muscle, which is thought to give it a higher anabolic-to-androgenic ratio than DHT itself.[3]
Risks & side effects
Most important: The most important risk is cardiovascular. Like other AAS, drostanolone suppresses HDL ("good") cholesterol and raises LDL, and AAS use as a class is linked to high blood pressure, accelerated coronary atherosclerosis, cardiac hypertrophy, thrombosis and an increased risk of heart attack and sudden cardiac death.[5][6] Unlike oral 17α-alkylated steroids, it is not 17α-alkylated and is not known to cause liver toxicity, so the heart and lipids — not the liver — are the main concern.[1]
