Effects

  • Raises red blood cells / hemoglobin: Stimulates erythropoiesis to correct anemia; most dialysis patients improve their hemoglobin on therapy[3].
  • Reduces transfusion need: In surgical and anemic patients, EPO lowers the need for red-cell transfusions[7].
  • Increased oxygen-carrying capacity: Higher red-cell mass increases the blood's ability to carry oxygen, which is why it is abused for endurance performance and banned in sport[6][8].
