At a glance
Effects
- Rapid fat/weight loss: Boosts basal metabolic rate so the body burns energy as heat; clinical studies recorded weight loss at doses as low as 1-4 mg/kg/day.[1][9]
- Profuse sweating & feeling hot: Thermoregulatory effects (sweating, hot flushes) are the most commonly self-reported effects and become significantly more frequent above 150 mg/day.[10]
- Raised heart and respiratory rate: Increased pulse, heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate are physiological responses to the higher metabolism and body temperature.[6]
- Fatigue: Fatigue is among the most frequently reported adverse effects and increases at higher doses.[10]

What it is
How it works
DNP acts as a chemical proton ionophore that shuttles H+ across the inner mitochondrial membrane, dissipating the proton gradient.[7] This "uncouples" oxidative phosphorylation: the energy from electron transport that is normally stored as ATP is instead released directly as heat.[4] The result is a dramatic rise in metabolic rate and body temperature, which is what drives fat loss but also causes its lethal hyperthermia.[8][1]
Risks & side effects
Most important: DNP has an extremely narrow margin between an effective dose and a fatal one, and overdose causes uncontrolled hyperthermia (body temperatures up to ~44°C/111°F), cardiovascular collapse and death — often within hours and with no antidote available.[4][8][2] Toxicity can be self-amplifying ("runaway uncoupling"), making deterioration sudden and unpredictable.[1]
Common
Serious
- Fatal hyperthermia — body temperature can climb to ~44°C (111°F)[11]
- Cardiovascular collapse, tachycardia and cardiac arrest[8][12]
- Metabolic/respiratory acidosis and severe hyperkalemia[1]
- Death — there is no antidote and severe poisoning is frequently fatal[4][14]
- Rhabdomyolysis and multi-organ failure[16]
Rare
- Cataracts and blindness[14][16]
- Peripheral neuropathy / paresthesias[20]
- Agranulocytosis (loss of white blood cells)[17]
- Skin rashes (erythematous, pruritic, maculopapular)[17]
Safety & harm reduction
- Anyone seeking weight loss — DNP is banned for human use and classed as unfit for human consumption[2][3]
- People who cannot access immediate emergency/intensive care if symptoms develop[1]
- Anyone using other stimulants or thermogenics (e.g. clenbuterol, T3, caffeine), which compound hyperthermia and cardiac risk; a death has been reported with concurrent clenbuterol use[8][9]
Dosage context
There is no safe or approved human dose. For context only (not a recommendation): 1930s clinical studies recorded weight loss at 1-4 mg/kg/day,[9] and online self-reports most commonly cite 150-300 mg/day, with thermoregulatory, fatigue and neurological symptoms becoming significantly more frequent above 150 mg/day.[10] Fatalities have occurred at or near these "therapeutic" ranges and ingestions around 1 g have been fatal — the margin between effective and lethal is extremely narrow.[5][4]
